A beautifully preserved medieval city on the banks of the Danube, the historic value of this former Imperial territory is recognised in its World Heritage Site status. Rising above the roofs of the old town, the cathedral is well worth a quick visit, even if only to hear the choristers rehearse (nicknamed "the cathedral sparrows", they are among Germany's most famous choirs). But car rental lets you take to the road to appreciate one of the most beautiful regions anywhere in Germany. A short drive away is Walhalla, an almost unreal-looking Classical temple to the great figures in Germany's political and cultural history, while the nearby Befreiungshalle (or Hall of Liberation) grandly celebrates the wars against Napoleon. A further drive brings you within walking distance of the Donaudurchbruch, where woods, river and towering cliffs combine in a spectacular landscape, and the pretty waterside village of Kelheim.
