The town is situated in Lower Saxony and is home to the only deep water port in Germany. There are a lot of other things to explore here, besides its busy and interesting waterfront. The city aquarium is home to seals, sharks, penguins, and crustaceans of many types, and is located on the Sudstrand beach. The Navy Museum, another landmark, contains exhibits depicting boats and warships belonging to the navy of Germany. The Sea Visitor Centre is another great place to visit if you are enthralled by marine life. Or, if you like water sports, you can drive down to the harbour area to rent a boat for sailing. There are plenty of leisure activities for landlubbers too, including golf. The annual Weekend on the Jade event, involving ships from within and outside Germany, bring people together to participate in a fun filled week of music, games, and other activities. You may drive to the Nordseepassage for shopping and dining out. This area is replete with restaurants and retail stores. A nearby attraction, Helgoland, is the only offshore island in Germany, and you can reach this island by ferry.
