Driving Tips

Slovenia has a large network of roads and motorways that are generally well-maintained and signposted although surfaces may be more variable in rural and mountainous areas. Also in rural regions be aware of animals on the road and poorly lit streets at night. Driving in Slovenia rewards you with views of its stunning countryside and scenic coastlines.

  • Between 15th November and 15th March Winter tyres must be fitted or snow chains available in the car.
  • Toll vignettes are required for most major motorways. These can be bought at border crossings or petrol stations.
  • Children under 1.50 metres must be in an appropriate baby or booster seat.
  • Parking is generally easy in rural areas while most large cities have a good system of parking split between metred zones and multi-storey car parks along with Park and Ride services.
  • Damage caused to your car hire in Slovenia by driving off paved surfaces is your responsibility and repair costs will be passed on to you.

Top 4 Architectural Sites

  • Triple Bridge
  • Maribor Castle
  • Kranj Tunnels
  • Koper

The Triple Bridge is a group of three bridges that cross the Ljubljanica River. They connect Ljubljana's modern city with its historic medieval centre. Maribor Castle is not quite a palace and not quite a castle. This fancy Baroque building now houses a regional museum. Under the town of Kranj are over a kilometre of tunnels. Although some were used as air-raid shelters during the Second World War the original purpose of the tunnels has been lost in the mists of time. The tunnels are now home to exhibitions during the day while at night guided tours take you through a world of nocturnal animals. The port city of Koper is an interesting blend of Venetian and Gothic architecture. The da Ponte Fountain is a copy of the Rialto Bridge in Venice.

Top 4 Natural Sites

  • Lake Bled
  • Triglav National Park
  • Skocjan Caves
  • Plitvice Lakes

The beautiful tourist area of Lake Bled lies in the Julian Alps region of North West Slovenia. Bled Island sits in the lake and is home to a pilgrimage church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The Triglav National Park is one of the most important in Slovenia. It lies in the country's Alpine massif and is known for its numerous species of medicinal plants. The Skocjan Caves are on UNESCO's World Heritage List and considered to be among the most notable cave systems in the world. Archaeological finds cover all periods of human history. The Plitvice Lakes are popular tourist attractions. Sixteen lakes are connected by a series of waterfalls while the forest around them is inhabited by mammal species such as deer, wolves, boar and deer.

Important Film locations

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) was filmed in the Triglav National Park and the mountainous area of Bovec. The Sam Peckinpah war film Cross of Iron (1977) had some scenes shot in the village of Obrov while the 1967 biopic about the life of American dancer Isadora Duncan was partly filmed in Ptuj.

Subject to a surcharge and with written permission cross-border rentals are allowed to most European countries. Certain car categories have country restrictions. Crossing borders without the correct permission will invalidate your insurance.

Always a pleasure hiding a car from here!

There was no hassle about insurance as my card covered it. They put a hold on my card but its wasn't put through. Agent was very helpful. We got and nice upgrade BMW for 4€ a day. However be warned that the airport not Sixt charges 10€ a day for premium location. That was 120€ extra that was not reflected in original invoice. You also pay 80€ to take out of the country. Sixt was good but I ended paying 120€ more than expected.

Had a great 3 day rental from this location, no problems. Car was new and great, staff were helpful

great service. I did a mistake and booked the car from the city and not from the airport. the staff helped and gave me their last car.

Smooth return. Enjoyed a lot. Car new.

We had a completely fine experience with Sixt at the Ljubljana airport. The car was good, came to about 340 euros for 3 days with zero excess insurance, navigation and second driver. The deposit was 500 euros extra but this was returned within 24 hours.

There was a scratch on the car before hand, we videoed and showed the man at the desk who helped us and he said this was purely cosmetic. There was a friendly member of staff at the end who did a full walk around inspection of the car and confirmed all in good order and then gave us a document to sign to confirm this. This was very reassuring.

Reading other reviews always worries me, but I think it should convince you take out fully comped insurance. I'm sure most people who have done this have had no problems.

Car delivered to my hotel. Very convenient.

Pick up in the city centre was efficient and helpful. On returning the car to the airport we were surprised that the office staff did not want to check the car before we signed the paperwork and left. This is standard practice so that both parties agree no damage has been done - either during the trip or in the car park. After we insisted, the girl there reluctantly checked it but was obviously annoyed.

I used Flizzr (Sixt) - Cheap, good comprehensive insurance offered, and the staff were brilliant in Ljubljana airport base.

Sixt were great even when our flight was delayed by 2 hours (only 30 Euro surcharge and we arrived close to midnight) and I left my wallet/glasses in the car after drop-off (they sent someone to go and find them in the open car parking lot).

Slovenia has the best driving roads in Europe, and possibly even better than New Zealand. You need to hire a car and experience Slovenia's stunning roads and scenery. I would definitely recommend!!!

Had great experience on my trip to Slovenia on 7/22. Rented a small car for 5 day trip, got free upgrade as my choice was not available. Car was Renault Clio with just few km driven. All I can say is that everything worked out smoothly. Fully insured and service 24h/7 (that I didn't need). Service at the counter was excellent. No flaws for me, just 5 stars

I was hesitant to rent from Sixt after reading some poor reviews but they offered the best pricing. I was very pleased with the entire rental experience. Courteous man checked me in and another very helpful man went over the car with me and helped set the GPS to English and instructed me how to use it.

The car was clean and new. Very glad I decided on the GPS as it worked so much better than maps on my phone and is safer.

I placed the keys in the after hours drop box when checking in for my early flight. I was only charged what was agreed on beforehand as there was no damage to the car.

The only thing I would recommend is not paying for the full tank of petrol. I drove to several areas of Slovenia and used less than half a tank.

SIXT is my go to rental agency but was hesitant to use this location based on the negative reviews but ended up having a pleasant experience. I was assisted by Mr. Rok who was very patient and helpful- I was given a basically brand new premium SUV as booked. Make sure you pay the cross border fee if taking the vehicle to another country. For people getting hit with damage claims, document and photograph the car before driving off.

Since some of the reviews were quite shocking, I felt like I had to share my positive experience I had renting a car here in June 2022!

The servers of Sixt Europe were apparently down on the day we wanted to pick up our online reservation, so they had to fill out a new one by hand with the approximate price I told them. For the inconvenience, we got a lovely free upgrade (an almost brand new Cupra Fermentor) with no damages.

Upon returning, everything went very smooth, the rep saw that the car was still in great condition. However, I did not get a signed document or anything else to proof the condition I had returned the car in, so I had to specifically ask for it. I am not sure whether the guy simply forgot about it, but considering some of the reviews I would definitely suggest to get a signed copy of the vehicle check-in form, so no new damages can be charged later on.

The entire process was smooth, the car was fantastic, They we’re flexible with the time. Anna the staff from sixt was very friendly.

The place unfortunately did not have a vehicle, I didn't reserve in advance, however, the clerk was kind and professional and assisted me with securing an Internet connection, my data roaming expired on the spot. Reserve your car in advance here.

Had a great experience renting a car from Sixt at the Ljubljana train station. The employees were helpful, honored the agreement, and also gave us a free upgrade to a brand new SUV.

I have rented from this location 4 times, all without problem, in fact the experience was really great, helpful staff, cars were fine, location for me was key. I always do a video walk around with the car when I pick it up, in the light or with flash on from my phone. It's fast easy and avoids disagreements as the videos are location and time stamped by Google or Apple. When I return the car I do the same thing, walk around film every side in detail, again date, time and location stamp. Once when I rented a car from a different company at Malpensa the video saved me claims as I saw the unmentioned scratch when I picked the car up, it was clear in the video and they did try, but failed. Far too often people (both renters and car company workers) miss damage and assume when they notice it, the damage was done by last user. Free phone video changes this and saved everyone trouble.

Had a great and smooth experience here. Booked Audi A6 and really got suggested the very same vehicle which was surprising as long as rental companies usually provide something worse in fact. As long as the Audi was station wagon, I asked for sedan replacement and got literally brand new BWM 3 sport package with only 5000 km. Gorgeous fresh car, enjoyed it very much.

Returned it with no damage and got my 1500 eur deposit refunded to credit card in 4 days. I was a little bit nervous because they don't block the amount on card, they charge it together with rental cost, but it went smooth.

Just a usual precausion: check for damage carefully before getting out of garage. I always use flashlight and check surface thoroughly.

Was not entirely sure about renting a car here because of some negative reviews I have seen about Sixt Ljubljana Airport, but.. I have to say I had the most pleasant experience with this renting place!

Here are some major points I enjoyed:

+ Pick-up did not take more than 10min

+ Extremely friendly, professional and efficient staff

+ We got a free upgrade from Renault Clio to a new Seat Leon FR (adaptive cruise control, apple car play, rear camera and everything that anyone would need in a car and more)

+ Drop-off was extremely smooth, probably took less than 5min

5/5, totally recommend this place!

It's just simple and good quality car hire. Turn up, no pressure selling just give you a car (even a free upgrade for me); when I returned they gave a quick check for 3 minutes and let me go, again really easy and polite.
