Driving Tips

Driving Tips

Drive with caution on motorways in particular as Hungarians have a reputation for aggressive driving which includes tailgating and overtaking at the last moment. The country has a growing network of motorways which all start in Budapest. These are generally in good condition but surfaces on minor roads can be variable. If you are crossing the country remember that apart from in and near Budapest the Danube has very few bridges. Factor the time taken by ferry crossings into your plans.

More tips for enjoying driving in Hungary:

  • Drive on the right in Hungary and remember that Kilometres are used for distances and speed limits.
  • Unless otherwise indicated always give way to the right.
  • Tolls on the M1, M2, M5 and M7 motorways must be paid in advance by toll cards. These are readily available at petrol stations and post offices and are valid for ten days, one month or a year.
  • Snow chains are compulsory in parts of the country during Winter. Maximum speeds with snow chains are 50 km/h.
  • No children under 12 are allowed in the front of vehicles and if under 1.5m should be in appropriate child seats.
  • Parking is easily available and clearly marked but be aware that in Budapest this is closely monitored and you may be clamped or towed even if only 30 minutes beyond your ticket time.
  • Damage caused to any rental car by driving off paved surfaces is your responsibility and you will be charged for repairs.

Speed limits in Hungary

  • Residential areas: 50 km/h
  • National roads: 90 km/h
  • Motorways: 110 - 130 km/h

Traffic Infractions and on-the-spot fines:

Hungarian police are allowed to issue on-the-spot fines. These vary from 15,000 to 300,000 HUF for offences such as:

  • Driving without a seat belt
  • Speeding
  • Not stopping at red lights
  • Drink driving

In this trip I required a car for my bussines trip, that means everything was arranged by my company. About the service at the airport in Budapest the staff is friendly and kind, only now because there were some remodelations at the parking lot was a little bit confusing the drop off from the car, reason why I needed to walked 2 times from the airport to the parking lot, "TIP" check at the rear area from the parking for the container office. The car was clean when I picked it up and when I droped off the car, the revision was fast and easy by Marci, nice agent !

It was the first time i made a rent here but was definetly not the last.

The staff was really helpful, and answered all my questions professionally.

The handover and return went smoothly and quickly.

The rented car was nice and clean without any issues, just like a brand new car from a dealership.

Norbert is a gentleman with a heart of gold and a smile that fills one’s soul with the elation of a flower meeting the morning sun.

Have rented cars with Sixt at Budapest Airport a few times now. Consistent quality and very friendly staff. Last time I got a upgrade. Instead of a Kia Picanto I was given a Kia Ceed. Also I did not book extra insurance, since Sixt won't scam you with scratches and stuff. Just fill up the petrol tank before turning the car in and you're fine. I will choose Sixt again when in need of a rental car in Hungary. Excellent and recommended

I was lucky to have Petra for my first experience with sixt and she was a delight. She was new, but very knowledgable, and perfect English. My car was just what I had reserved, only new - ~ 275km total!

Q for sixt: there was a space for the spare tire but nothing in it - is that normal/ expected?

Sho A.

Petra and Zsolt provided me with an amazing service they were very attentive to my needs and requirements. A deal i couldnt miss! Thanks guys!
